I have a problem with car insurance, or rather a friend of mine does.

My friend owns a Mitsubushi Pajero which is the Japanese import version of the Shogun. She is a named driver on a policy still held by her ex and wants to get her own insurance. Thing is, as it's an import there are various condtions the insurance companies place on the policy; you have to have held a driving licence for 2 years and be over 25 - both of which are fine. The other condition is that you must have at least 2 years no claims discount and as she has been a named driver on the policy for the last 11 years she doesn't have any.

I want to borrow the car to use for Glastonbury, and I could do this on the existing policy but I would only be insured third party. We would both prefer to get some insurance in her name and add me as a named driver for a month while I use it for Glasto but we have yet to find an insurance company that will do this without her having any no claims of her own. It seems the fact that she's been claim-free for 11 years as a named driver does not count.

So, does anyone know of any insurance companies that perhaps specialise in imports, or are more lenient with their conditions on imported cars? Has anyone been in this kind of situation before?

Any suggestions/advice welcomed.

My mate at work's got an imported Subaru and says he had a bugger getting a decent quote, even with 7 years no claims. Eventually he got a good deal from Churchill, apparently they have a special "imported car unit" or something.

He didn't have a problem getting insured elsewhere, it was just really expensive, so I guess it may not be much help. But if they have a department that deals specifically with imports it's worth a try I guess.

OR... google just threw up this:

http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/ - "Specialists in imported, modified and Japanese cars."
