As someone who likes to dip in and out of TMO quite a bit (first time caller, long time listener), I'm a bit confused about who is who, what their motivation is, relationships with other people. Like coming in on a soap opera and only at the fifth time of watching do you realise that the reason Nigel and Sonia hate each other is because Nigel has been buming Sonia's dog (or something). It would be nice to get the whole 'dog buming thing' up front by having a useful guide on the regulars for the sometime users like me.
In a nutshell, any chance of a 'character list' of who is who - like at the start of long Russian novels.
So far I've picked up the following:
Thorn - The journeyman. Honest with the highs and lows of life.
Kovacs - cultural supremo with odd choice in favourite comics. Experienced the champagne of comic life but now slums it on the Diamond White (Zenith). May or may not fancy Brandy.
Brandy - the sane voice on the board? Shares the same 'love' of Croydon as Thorn.
Misc Files?
Ben?
Please help with this. Realise this is navel gazing and will be told to fuck off.
I write this in the full knowlege that it may die on its arse.

Bamba, for fuck's sake don't give it out if you can't take it. You cast yourself as a moody, thick-skinned, bullish character on here so you really should be able to handle someone responding to you slightly acerbically without compiling a fucking report about it and submitting it to the board.

One of my fave things about the internet is the way it makes us, sophisticated and intelligent adults as we are, behave like children closing their eyes and hiding behind their fingers and going 'aha! I can't see you, so you can't see me!' The notion that if someone stumbles upon your diaryland they just 'shouldn't read it' because it's dishonourable, and they should treat it with the same respect they would a paper diary. The idea that, if I post on a different forum under a different name, then I suddenly, magically, have a completely different identity that has no relation to or similarities with the original one. All of which is, of course, just so much bullshit. Unfortunately.

Oh fuck off with "compiling a report", one single sentence is hardly that and your post is further 'weakened' by such ridiculous exagerration. That aside, if you'd given me shit about something I'd said/done here then fair enough but to go and lurk somewhere else then suddenly bring that up and sling it at me on TMO is, I would say, slightly below the belt. If I'd brought it up here, made it part of the domain of discussion as it were, in the same way Thorn sometimes does about HB then yeah, I could hardly complain, but it gets my back up to have you pull it out of nowhere. Possibly I'm not justified in that but there it is. Undoubtedly you've got a large web-presence yourself but I wouldn't go hunting for stuff you've done/said elsewhere just to use for ammunition here.
I had some other comments, spurred by Londie's post, but work calls for the moment.

Why? I didn't say anything bad about TCL. It's hardly "lurking" on there if I read the 5 threads they post every week. I "lurk" more on the Guardian website, which has rather more new content every day. If you want it to be private, I'm sure you could make TCL available to be read by members only.
So many TMO contributors also post on TCL that I don't see it as "spying" to check it out now and then, when I've run out of things to look at on other boards.
I didn't see my original comment as especially spiteful.

It wasn't really settled, it was just brushed over. The reason I posted my reply to VP was as an attempt to explain why I'd got so fucked off with you rather than just leaving things the way they were. It's got a bit out of hand again but it was a genuine attempt to say "Look, here's my justification, I wasn't just trying to be a dick for the sake of it" which is what I suspected your over-riding impression would be had I left things unsaid. Granted, I probably wouldn't have had the 'balls' to reopen the subject myself but when VP's post gave me an opportunity to clear the air I took it. As to what I did and didn't deserve from you, I don't agree with your opinion there but, y'know, fuck it.

This is really just an extended explanation of your definition of 'lurk' which is pretty beside the point really.
quote:Originally posted by kovacs: I didn't see my original comment as especially spiteful.
If it wasn't spiteful, if it wasn't making a point then what was it for? As far as I remember you've made withering comments in the past about Thorn's place on the HB Relationships board and, with your comment coming so quickly on the heels of my incendiary post, my assumption that your comparison was having a go was reasonable. If not then why even mention it? Why bring it up at all? Of course, I can't prove you were taking a snidey dig at me but I can't believe that you weren't and so for you to complain at me biting back seems a bit much. Christ, I told you to cram your post up your arse, hardly the most personal or biting comment ever posted on TMO.

I thought part of your complaint was that I was "lurking" on TCL, which of course has negative connotations and makes it sound like I sneak around trying to gather incriminating information, rather than that I read lots of public websites including that one.

OK: well you were making a general, mild enough put-down about the level of conversation being Handbag-poor. I guess my post was a "riposte". No big deal, surely. As far as I know, you do techie stuff on TCL and banter with Louche. My comment translates as fuck off where you came from, then.
Re. Thorn on Handbag, I find his role there very entertaining and if you remember, recently defended him (on here) when he was attacked on that board. I have probably posted on Handbag more than he does, so I'm in no position to criticise him for it.

I dunno, lurking has never really had negative connotations in my head, especially given how long I spent doing it on SeeThru myself. I use it simply to mean "reading a message board without posting there" and certainly the fact that you read stuff on TCL at all wasn't part of my issue.

I should maybe make clear that I was only putting-down the previous two posts on that thread, Saltrock and Mikey's I think, not the thread as a while which I quite enjoyed and even contributed to myself though I don't know if that changes anything. Regardless, if you had said something more straightforward like "Piss off back to TCL then" I doubt I'd have been annoyed, it was the sneering tone of the post that really got me. Though perhaps from what you say the 'sneer' is down to my reading and wasn't your intention.

I remember the defense you mounted but 97's actions there were a bit off-colour generally so that doesn't really preclude the possiblity that you still 'looked down on' his position there. No, as I said above neither would I have if that was all you'd said but your tone and the obfuscation of your meaning caused by throwing in the reference to Thorn on HB meant I instantly assumed your post was more mean-spirited than apparently was meant.

No, in this your are entirely correct and I only post this response knowing that it'll be a mixture of clarifications and apolgies unlikely to spark any further discussion. As with all spats on message boards the time-lapse nature of the responses and the 'deep' analysis that results always absorbs any real sting and I'm now no longer even vaguely pissed off about it if that helps. Given that you've stated above that you didn't really mean that much by your comment I'd like to apologise for going nuts. My knee-jerk rage I think was caused by two things:
I do tend to read a sneering tone into things you say if it's not immediately obvious what your actual intent is. It's like the opposite to when I read Thorn or Louche's posts, they'd have to try very hard indeed to make me at all angry whereas, from others, it takes comparitively little. I'd quite like to blame that on your general persona but I doubt that's really the case, this is really my 'issue'.
I'm enjoying being part of the community on TCL for very different reasons to enjoying TMO but I'm still finding my feet to an extent there and am thus over-sensitive to criticism of my behaviour (as I would be posting anywhere for the first while). I'm not really complaining. I was just bored at work and that was (sadly) the best thing I could come up with.
Is it inappropriate of me to thank people for their responses to this thread and for not blanking my initial post which could easily have been an online monument to my tragic and unrealised need for group fulfilment?

No I'd just, for some reason, put the words "How does that grab you?" after my apology which made it seem utterly insincere when I read it back so I took it out.

For the clean of soul who have not had the misfortune, she is a Jazz singer of some talent, it has to be said if you like that sort of thing, and all is fine until she is allowed to speak.
Think Janet Street Porter. No wait, think Pamela Stephenson impersonating Janet Street Porter, crossed with a chav and a horse. This woman has a voice that would put your average North Sea Ferry fog horn to shame, and with a Saarf Lundun chavness of preposterous proportions. I caught her once on Jonathan Ross's show, and I can just imagine the Record Company execs recoiling in horror at this womans outburts. She is from a wealthy Jewish Family apparently, yet obviously got kicked out of charm school on day one.

He's Portuguese. Had a colourful career - I saw him play his on his debut for West Ham back in ooh, must have been 95. Against Notts Forest it was (1-0 we won), came on in the 60th minute to much applause, and I remember him kicking the ball just once, target was goal, recipient was row K of the Bobby Moore stand. The hype lead to him playing for Ajax here in Holland, but he seemed to spend a little too much time either modelling or clubbing. Shame really, a lot of potential.

Yeah - being eloquent is one thing; simply endeavouring to fill each of your posts with the most pointlessly convoluted sentence structures, and grandiloquent language until they choke under extraneous and pointless words, which curl around the sentence until all sense is lost in a bid to misfoot less astute readers into believing that such a tactic might actually be construed as intelligence or eloquence, is quite another.

I presume you weren't around when Norton was trying to 'prove' that the Final Solution never happened.
Also: dic definition of "eloquent" =
quote:1. Characterized by persuasive, powerful discourse: an eloquent speaker; an eloquent sermon. 2. Vividly or movingly expressive: a look eloquent with compassion.
Neither of which, I think, could be applied to the Snorton we know and tolerate. Unless you're being funny - so hard to tell nowadays!

This word, makes my penis crawl inside me parasite and touch my tonsils. It's like someone chewing cotton wool and scraping the blackboard with taloned nails. Whilst making me listen to 'The Birdie Song' of course.
mumblemumbulated to EXCILE!

So is Kovacs everyone then? My fear now is that nearly every post here is from one person thus making a mockery of the fundamental reason for this thread.
Once again, good intentions are ruined. The perpetrator (perp?) gets his winkle jollies whilst the victim can sadly cry and look forward to a brighter future.

Otherwise, great job! I couldn't have written better bio for myself.
I haven't been around long enough to see him do this. Damn - remind me never to interview people for jobs. I'm just too trusting.

Wasn't being funny - have not been around long enough to realise that Norton is actually some form of revenant Nazi. How distasteful...

I just got offered an interview for a job marketing the devil! Wish Dixie was here - a company that is heavily involved in the reconstruction of Iraq! Woo me!

the secret to posting in multiple personalities is to use a different type of browser for each personality. for example i use internet explorer for bandy, mozilla firefox for scrawny and opera for dr benway. it means that you don't have to bother about logging in and out all the time. magic.

This is too well thought out to be a lie.

I'll confess and say that I'm actually four people here. Misc Files, Brandy and 2@ are all me. But this alter-ego is my favourite.

I don't actually care whether you're calling Bandy 'Brandy' on purpose or not but can you keep doing it as I find it incredibly amusuing? Ta.
