As one of the longest standing and most important posters here, I think it falls to me to make an important post. We all like a bit of a joke but sometimes you guys go too far. I know we're all creative and ironic but, hey, some posters, like Herbs for example, don't always understand the Dumasian cut and thrust of our epee like wit. It's all for one and one for all guys. The forum is a macrocosmic representation of the larger world and it is important we all recognise this. For example, when posters visit the opera or a gallery, they just assume everyone there is on the same level. Stupid people can understand art too, you know? I don't want to reopen that debate about aesthetics because I think everyone here knows my opinions on that subject by now . However, I will say that if I look at a picture or a piece of sculpture I'm drawing on a lot of background when it comes to theory, intellect and Guardian supplements. If someone like Bamba views the same piece through his uninformed eyes he might see something different. It's still art guys. So, to reseat the metaphor on our current track, this is a forum for everyone. Those of us with sharp minds should be careful we don't poke out a less, shall we say, clever, eye.

dont apologise hippy. it is lame when people come into throwaway pass-the-time threads they have not been taking part in and say that they are shit and the people involved should feel ashamed of themselves for not reaching some lofty pinnacle of posting quality. lamelamelame. if i made a point of berating those involved in every to-my-eyes pointless thread based on a weak satirical or comedy premise that i opened at 10pm after a hard days work, and then doing a huff and saying i was going to my other forum where people talk about proper things, id have blisters on my fingers and everyone on the board would think i was a div. its all very well to think a pointless thread is pointless because you werent taking part in it, but then to make like some sort of superior being because you werent taking part is a bit shitbags. its a bit like turning up to a hungover sunday afternoon kickabout in the park 10 minutes from the end of the first half, calling the players a bunch of fat losers who would make pele weep tears of jizm, and then stropping that you are off to the other park to play volleyball with your mates. well good for you, matey! whats the point in making people feel like lamers for having fun that you werent a part of?

Personally I think there was some inventive satire on there, with excellent timing and riffing on the previous posts. Of course I'm biased as I contributed, and I can imagine coming late to a jokey thread and complaining myself that it's a waste of space.
I didn't think that this was a wholesale pisstake of Handbag from some supposed position of superiority though -- many people on TMO never even read Handbag. Surely many of the posts here were parodies of stuff we're all used to on TMO. Yes, some of my posts were emulations of HB repartee, and frankly yes I do think there is a lot of drivel in their "debate". Other posts on this thread, though, were caricatures of typically-TMO pretentious wank. There was surely a fair bit of laughing-at-yourself involved: I even think Jonesy did a quasi-recognisable version of my prose, though who knows... fruitless to try to capture the kovacs style when you have a tenth of his intelligence.
I have definitely read more inane and pointless threads than this, though.

While lying in bed mentally sketching out the next day's strategies for TMO, I thought of two more important points anyway.
1. Fionnula's post is mainly critical of a tendency to ridicule Handbag contributors as a lower species of board community. But to several TMO posters -- for instance, me, Astromariner, Thorn and Bamba -- Handbag is also "their board" rather than some despised foreign other. If you post on Handbag regularly, doesn't that change the dynamic when you also poke fun at some aspects of it? It's only as sniping or bullying as it would be to do impressions of people in your workplace.
2. Handbag is not actually some homogenous mass with the same mentality. The kind of feeble argument I was mocking on this thread -- "ffs if u dont like it, dont read it" -- and so on is not representative of all Handbag contributors. I have seen, many times, Handbag posters mocking and caricaturing this kind of post themselves, just as a lot of the posts on this thread were pisstakes of typical TMO idiocy.
So the them/us, outside/inside distinction you were making, FtC, is not all that simple.
I apologise for spoiling the thread a bit myself by getting all serious on its ass.

This is right. I like posting on handbag: once you've been there for a while, you see that there's as much variance in the style and scope of people's contributions as there is here. On this board, I have consistently defended handbag against charges of being uniformly vacuous and unforgivably pink.
So Fionnula's disabled child analogy, whilst it might chime with most people's perceptions of handbag, doesn't really fit for me. Certainly, the stuff I was posting was a parody of some posts there but I genuinely don't see those posts as being representative of the community as a whole.

Similarly, anyone who thinks that slagging off some of the stupidity that does run rampant in certain sections of Handbag instantly means you're slagging off the entire place and everyone on it should probably look to their own attitudes about it before giving anyone else stick. Yes. I guess it does make a difference if you respect the people you're taking the piss out of. I have no problem with people criticising my posts, threads or whatever. I agree this thread was a bit shit but there have been much worse over the years. I don't agree with some of the criticisms leveled at the thread or, indirectly, at me but I don't really see there's anything but aggro to be gained by trying to defend myself.

I came out with some insulting material for Sidney and Astromariner during a little feud in late 03 or early 04, but then perhaps we haven't reached the stage where we can laugh fondly at all that and appreciate it as well-crafted abuse. It is probably not wise to dig up old conflicts of that kind when the argument was meant seriously rather than as jokey banter.

I had a big answer prepared for 69ComebackElvis on the "no nobs" thread but he never came back! The post that was never even typed up remains scribbled in my faithful notebook, all furious scrawl: I think I did most of it on the train. Quick fire moral dilemma time: I am in the office virtually on my own. I have barely done any work all day. I am supposed to stay til 5pm but I don't really have much work to do and I am going to be one of only 3 people who are coming in for 3 hours tomorrow.
