what pastimes, work, interests, passions will or may be side-lined due to 'routine' weekend endevours?
ME: I need to complete the painting of the spare room. I'm a quarter of the way there on the 2nd coat and the skirting boards are screaming for gloss, believe me they'd lap from my hand. But the
situation has now turned epic and I have been putting it off or looking for a diversion.
Maybe Sunday, with The Queens of the Stone Age, they'll help out and they owe me one.

Well, I have to save an oil refinery from the scourge of asbestos.

From Sunday, I will being working days and nights on the refinery for two months as it is shutdown, so no more TMO for me.

It is dangerous there. I may die.

Nice little holiday for everyone else, though.

Actually, last week I painted the kitchen, so if you need any hints or tips, don't hesitate to ask.

Ha! I'll believe it when I see it.

This weekend will consist of the usual drinking and smoking in excess. I should be looking for a house.

Good work fellas.

The people on the PWEInation board are the nicest people ever. I met this guy and had a ten minute chat outside Shepherds Bush at the PWEI reformation gigs and he replied to my blatant plug with:

quote:
When you're coming up north give me a shout and we'll sort you with a gig and crash space.
and thanks roy! [Smile] We hope to see hooligans smashing up the streets and singing it loudly whilst old folk cower indoors. Nice commentary.

Well, I think that's a really nice website actually, and I also very much enjoyed listening to Menthol whilst, coincidentally, chewing a menthol and eucalyptus flavour Airwaves. Can you make some slightly politer t-shirts though, for the older fan?

Posted by Roy (Member # 705) on :

I didn't see Menthol. I'll have a listen to that.

Posted by Roy (Member # 705) on :

Menthol really reminds me of 1989/1990 house music. The piano and mad drums; the sample that you could imagine really doing your head in on a pill as you tried to work out what it was saying; the changes of tempo.

Good stuff.

What's this thread about? Was it some kind of veiled attempt for zebraboy to make a strange Queens of the Stone Age reference? [Confused]

Posted by Roy (Member # 705) on :

I think he wants the Queen of the Stone Age to help him paint his spare room.

Funny thing is, he says "They will help me out and owe ME one" as if painting his spare room is some kind of personal favour Zebraboy grants people.

Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :

I should point out that the MP3 of Menthol is at a very early stage. The live version we've been rehearsing is an altogether different beast, replete with a heavily distorted thrash guitar and thumping bass replicating the lower end of the synth part. Glad you like it though - I do have a soft spot for the simplicity of this mix.

Posted by Uber Trick (Member # 456) on :

I liked the lady's voice.

I've got lots of rooms that need stripping then painting if Queens of the Stone Age or anyone else wants to help out. I'm considering having a party called 'The Big Strip' where everyone strips and er, strips, and er, I dunno, plays 'Put your clothes back on Poker' or something and gets drunk and stuff.

Posted by Roy (Member # 705) on :

People could paint themselves and do body prints on the wall.

Maybe not. It might make your flat look like Hiroshima.

Posted by Uber Trick (Member # 456) on :

No. Our design aesthetic is red, white and black. We're not racist! My bedroom is going to have white walls and then I'm going to strip off the municipal lino and polish up the concrete floor and paint it red. Londons room is going to be white walls and a white polished concrete floor.

Here is a picture of our front room with little London and I reflected in the window:

 -

white walls and flowers, red wine (and jacket I'm wearing) and black table and laptop. Perfectly fitting in with our design aesthetic!

Football? I'm getting out my retro rollerskates which are currently in our 'Cupboard of Hate' - there's this cupboard just outside our front door where someone - presumably the kid of the people who lived here before but you can never tell - has carved "HaTE iS ALL i fEEl" on the door :rad: We now put things that don't have a place, that smell bad, or that we hate in it, but we LOVE that cupboard!

Anyway, I should stop talking about our beautiful new flat.

Have we established what this thread is about? Is it about things that you should be doing but aren't this weekend? I'm not meant to be doing anything. Last night I turned in a beautifully crafted essay on a modern contextualist history of Wallace's definitions of the boundaries of science and how that affected his reputation as a scientist. This leaves me this weekend for debauchery. Which unfortunately sees me in on my own with expensive wine tonight while my sister plays hooky in my clothes that I need for tomorrow night. She is missing for TEH SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW! *sigh*

I'm actually wondering how Zebraboy is getting on with his painting. We haven't heard from him. Maybe he's had a nasty accident. Perhaps he was a light that shone for half as long, but twice so bright.

Or whatever.

I can't remember drinking much, in fact I can't remember much of anything. But what i do remember is dry retching for about 4 hours the next morning, and then discovering that me andmy mate had more or less polished off the entire bottle, plus a bottle of tequilla. I drank a lot that night.

Worst hangover ever.

Interloper:

I love your site -- the branding, the portraits, the overall consistency of the icons, the underground-network stylings, the world-conquering confidence of the concept. I didn't enjoy NOthing so much though, I'm afraid. After three careful listens I think my problem with it is the stubborn refusal to give the listener a tune except briefly in the chorus -- instead, there's a riot of textures and layers, which are interesting but make the track sound like a hoover being rattled around in a cupboard full of brillo pads and metal pots. I appreciate the idea of a scratchy, raw, messy aesthetic, but in practice it was hard to enjoy, and for some reason the vocals felt clumsily basic rather than vital and stripped-down. I like the tinny drums and the more sampled vox so I suppose it was mainly the verse voices that jarred for me: slightly out of time, obstinately unpretty, clunky... just not pleasant to hear. One bit that lifts it is the higher voices joining on the final line of the chorus; the rest of it I found, again, sounded willfully careless. Three guys in a bedroom laying down deliberately rough vocals sounds promising but there's also the risk that it can just turn out amateurish. Drowning that in fuzz should give it a Marychain vibe, but, I don't know, it just sounded like mediocre vocals disgused with loads of distortion.

Based on that one track, I like the description of your music better than the music itself. Don't take that badly. You seem to want to treat this project really professionally and seriously, so I'm giving you my honest view rather than soft-soaping because you're TMO boys.

On a positive note, I've enjoyed the track more every time I've listened to it. Perhaps on attempt #10 I'll love it? I would like your layered collages and experiment to feed into a richer, smoother, more tuneful sound -- but what do I know, I'm sounding like an advert for instant coffee.

Thanks for the feedback Kovacs. I think over time I had learned that about 90% of the battle is having good PR. I mean, we are really winging absoloutely everything we can at the moment (the track was mixed on headphones for gods sakes)

I think the idea to have this overly confident swagger was so that it would convince people to at least give it a try. Production value: low, facilities: none, confidence: massive. I've heard a lot of finished demos that Felix has been part of and he absoloutely loves being in the band so to me, that's a pretty big compliment. I get a lot of kudos from other musicians. We are getting lots of feedback, mostly from young females. They seem to love jumping up and down to the sound of boys being noisy. [Confused]

i don't know what to say really except I took your comments as quite helpful. We know there is a market for it, we are just trying to work out how and who will want it.

Edit: there is absoloutely no distortion on any of the vocals, I just sound that raw.

Look, Tmo, there's something I need to get off my chest. I know you're not going to be happy about this, and I'm sorry. I only hope that, in time, you realise that the decision was for the best. Let me start by saying that we started out with best intentions, and we had some fantastic times that'll stay with me forever. But as time went on it's become increasingly clear to both of us that while we care very deeply for each other, we're just too different to really make this work in the long term. I'm sure we can still be friends, although it's difficult now with everything so fresh and vivid in my memory.

I'm sorry TMO, but what I'm trying to say is, me and Kira actually kinda broke up.

Okay, what I thought was funny was if that Ringo had posted that well written post about him and Kira splitting up, and Kira was sitting at home, mashed on drugs and Victorian drinks and she read it and she's like "What? First I've heard of it...what's going on?"

Maybe not funny.

Yes. I was going to make a similar comment about imagine if you were broken up with via message board too! But I didn't. I posted about flying dogs and lazers.

I have to go to bed now in anger. My sister has stolen my weekend clothes and is not coming home AGAIN tonight. I didn't do any washing because I thought she was bringing said clothes of mine home. I now have precisely nothing clean or decent to wear when I go out tomorrow. Grr! [Mad]

Well, you see, you're supposed to say "But you mustn't go to bed in anger, it says so in the Bible" or similar and then try and persuade me to stay for a bit. But it's ok. I understand. Actually, it might not be in the bible that it says about not going to bed angry but there is definitely a saying about not letting the sun go down on your anger. But what about if the sun is already down when you get angry? then can you go to bed? its such a minefield.

Just download the program (v.small) and install (v.quick).

Just a headset and a microphone. In fact, I don't suppose you need the headset at all, just speakers and mic, but the proper call centre set is probably more comfy.

There's an extra thing you can get at http://www.voiceemotion.com which lets you play music over the phone too, although it's a little intrusive. But if you just want to say, "You know the song... this one" and play a bit, then it's ideal, probably.

We did, Kovacs. Again, thanks for your interest and comments. We've had some pretty diverse feedback ranging from appreciative teenage punk girls to my utterly confused, Elton John loving boss.

After a while of recording, rehearsing and listening to the tracks, I sometimes feel like I've lost any sense of how they would sound to someone who is listening for the first time. We're always keen to hear peoples' opinions.

Did you have a chance to listen to our other track, *Menthol?

vikram ignored the body on the sofa, concentrating instead on the one lying on the floor. The sunlight was spilling across the stripped floorboards, yet failing to penetrate the xanax slumber of his responses. It was as if the morning was passing though him; as if he wasn't there. Ten thousand bottles of wine and a million fags. He remembered to breath. The rancid memories had manifested as silence, and by sighing he attempted to crawl away from the splintered reality, to find a place to hide. But the body was still there.

Single images were intercut with long periods of simple void. A splash of disco red. Spittle on the lapels of a thousand dollar jacket. A scream. These things had changed overnight. The vibrant red was now a sickly black enemy, snaking across the ceiling. The spittle was a ghost. The scream was bouncing like a broken CD player. The scene demanded response, so Vikram sighed again, and sipped from a murky cocktail that had been thoughtlessly left in the sink. All the effort in the world could not drag feeling from inside the well of medication and alcohol. Was this?

The body on the sofa stirred and moaned. Benway lifted a bruised head from underneath the egyptian cotton sheet. The brief eye contact felt to vikram like a mirror reflecting a mirror. There was simply nothing in between. Vikram stood over the body on the floor. There was a faint scent of butchery. It was little more than a postcard from a world of cause and effect, a world where a beautiful corpse had a presence beyond the aesthetic. Vikram crouched, and lifted the thick matted hair from the face. The girl could have been asleep, had her nose and eyes been intact. The fine hairs on her jaw and cheeks revealed humanity, and they existed awkwardly against the bestial truth of the wounds. Her skin was cold, but not unpleasant to touch. The weight of her buttocks in his hand brought about a mechanical response.

'vikram......don't....'

Again, the mirror reflected a mirror.

'I was....'

but there were no more words. Vikram moved over to the sofa. The black stain had flowered underneath the sheets. Lifting the sheet, it was clear that Benway was unlikely to ever move from the sofa. Still, there was no memory behind this vision. Benway hadn't yet noticed, and he grabbed for the sheet. It wasn't cold in the room, yet his body was shivering. a pitch black sludge was oozing from underneath the dress he was wearing.

Vikram ran a knife gently across his own inner thigh.

But the pain couldn't escape from the cage.

That's terrifying and beautiful.

I like Menthol more -- the loopy, retro synths like a science fiction 70s strip bar, and the combination with tight drums (eg. at 0.33) kicks in very well. The robot-vocals give it an Air-meets-Kraftwerk cool vibe.

Still I prefer it when it's not so stripped down: there are moments at various stages in the track where the drum, for some reason, sounds clumsily (maybe deliberately) crude and off the beat (eg 1.30-1.50 approximately) -- maybe that drum's just too loud and flat but it's disappointing compared to the much more groovy snare sound that comes back around 2.20.

The Japanese-type string picking shape is a good constant through the song. It's all quite gentle though, and on the same level (except for when the snarey percussion kicks in and drops out) -- I wonder if you could beef it up into something bigger and clubbier.

I really like the version of Pure Science Fiction that Mikee sent me a while ago. Is anything happening with that one?

Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :

Thanks. As I said *here, it's a long way from being finished. The drums aren't final and there's a whole mess of guitar noise missing from this mix. Saying that, I think the beats are in time (or at least consistently out of time) throughout the track.

Glad you liked PSF, H1ppychick. We're currently working on a massively energetic live version which includes a lot of shouting and jumping around by Mikee and Felix, plus some unusual guitar sounds from my Avonator:
 -

Posted by Waynster (Member # 56) on :

Care to explain that modded guitar? Is it just cosmetic or does it actually sound different? I haven't seen anything like it before.

Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :

It's a bit of a one off. The device in the middle is fitted with two plastic pick strips which hit the strings when it rotates. The resulting sound redefines the phrase wall of sound. The best use I've found for it so far is to tune it to an open chord and use a slide and volume pedal to fade the almost synthy noise in and out. It only has one pickup, so the former selector switch is now an on-off switch for the rotator.

It's called the Avonator as it started out as a '70s Avon Les Paul before I butchered it. It runs off a 12v mains adaptor which delivers power via an XLR cable. I was sick of trying to cram 8x AAs in the back, each time it ran out of juice...

I have a couple of other projects in the works at the moment, including the Bassonator and an FX Briefcase.

Does it make a similar sound to the ebow ? That would ROCK !

Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :

Sort of. It's like the smoothness and constant tone of an ebow, with a layer of throbbing V8 engine over the top. The way it builds up when switched on makes it sound rather mechanical. I hit on the idea and started working on it years before I got involved with Interloper, but it seems to fit pretty well with Pure Science Fiction, particularly.

Another advantage of playing a one-handed guitar is the ability to mess with effects settings at the same time, or smoke a fag...
