I actually bought a new album this week. Purely on the hype.

 -

People have been banging on about it for months, so it was bound to be crap. But actually it is quite good and I'm sure loads of people here have heard it. It's a bit chaotic for "psychedelic" music. You want something nice and quiet really. But I can see why it's described like that I suppose, and it is an original sound, which is something of a miracle these days. Well, I say original. I mean, they've mixed the old harmonies and synths and rhythms in a slightly different way to previous people.

It's good on the headphones anyway.

I don't recommend stuff on here because that's guaranteed to disappoint, but I'm just saying, I like it. Anyone else?

This album gets better over time, which is always a good sign. Pure wall of sound, like The Who playing Baba O'Riley in an empty swimming baths while The Beach Boys sing harmony. On a completely different song. Or something.

Listened to this again last night for the first time in a couple of months and, by 'eck, it's getting better all the time. Great album. It's on Spotify as well. How are other people getting on with it?

All the other fans on here will no doubt be keen to see Animal Collective playing on Letterman.

Hello,

I have actually listened to The Animal Collective on Spotify a few times now. There's some good songs on there My Girls stands out to me - I'm pretty sure I already heard this on the radio too. I rarely enjoy listening to an entire album without breaking it up with songs from other bands, but yeah there's some good stuff there for sure.

On a similar vibe, ie. male voice harmonies with a modern twist, I've been quite liking "Everything Everything" There's only a couple of tracks on spotify at the moment http://open.spotify.com/album/1SPuBm3g4RfVa0JlD0f9Qr Suffragette Suffragette and Luddites and Lambs. But the track that I first heard from them, which I think is more recent is called Photoshop Handsome, you can check the video out on vimeo here http://www.vimeo.com/3283251 I quite like the bleepy bleepy sounds, check it out if you like.

Can we just clarify that there's no mistaking 'You're not gonna sit on my face when I'm not there' which obviously makes sense considering you wouldn't be able to do that unless you had a telescopic arsehole, but the main point is that peoples faces get sat on?

I'm just waiting for the old USSR to announce they're getting back together. The 80s won't be completely revived till that happens, as far as I'm concerned.

I'll give them a go. There's Fleet Foxes in this genre as well, of course, though they're a bit wet if you ask me.

Fans of good music will be reassured to know that zoog will see records from Clutch, the Wildhearts and apparently no less than four new albums from Devin Townsend.

This has got to class as unrestrained spamming hasn't it? It's impossible to start a thread about music or any other fucking subject on this place without the fucking Wildhearts making an appearance. [Mad]

I suppose I ought to listen to one of their records one day.

Edit: They've got three albums on Spotify. I'm running out of excuses now.

Anyone else?

I've only listened to a handful of tracks off the internet, but... it all seems a bit vanilla. I mean, I get the joy... and the upliftingness... and the playful experimentation and delight in sound and... all that. But, where's the anger? Where's the stupid? Where's the balls-out chug? The undertow that makes you a bit scared and dizzy? The chord that makes you laugh out loud?

Sorry dang. I guess I just... I just didn't think.

Right now, this very minute, as I type, I'm listening to Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts from Funkadelic's Standing On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown.

Man, it is astonishing!

It did mark Eddie Hazel's comeback, though.

Special.

Animal Collective now voted Record Of The Year by critics. So it must be good, right?

I've got quite a lot of records with anger, stupid and balls-out chug. They have their place. I'd say this one was a supreme example of "the undertow that makes you a bit scared and dizzy", and there are many places where it makes me laugh out loud too. Well, smile loudly to myself anyway. It's like being immersed in a 3D film, but much better because it's music. An enormous record.

I think the Soppy Male Voice Harmonies prize for 2009 (a hotly contested genre) should go to Oh My God, Charlie Darwin by The Low Anthem [Spotify link]. Outrageously syrupy.

I just drove back to Dorset listening to the top selling albums of the decade and we should all be ashamed that the top selling album of the decade was James fucking blunt. Dido had two in the top ten. What the hell is wrong with this generation.

This generation? Massive sales have always been a complete mystery. Never forget that, in the United States, Garth Brooks is second only to The Beatles in the all-time sales charts.

And look at the best selling albums of all time. Thriller, which is frankly little more than a clinical and soulless Disco record, has sold more than twice as many copies as its nearest rival... which is Back In Black, a Rock album with a couple of good tracks but really nothing to make it stand so far above hundreds of other Rock albums.

And so on. Random, isn't it.

The fucking Dirty Dancing soundtrack is at number 6. In the biggest selling albums of all time. WTF? James Blunt is a minor curiosity when compared with a list like that.
