I have been downloading some West Wing series 5 video files (mainly AVI with the occasional MPEG), using BitTorrent/eMule. Unfortunately when I try to play the AVI files back I get the following error message...
Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompressor could be found.
so I just get the audio soundtrack playing back and no picture.
I have tried playing them in RealOne Player, Windows Media Player and Quicktime Player and none seem to be able to resolve this.
Can anyone provide any help re video codecs and what I need to do? I have all of these lovely episodes which I can't watch .

Have you tried DivX ? A lot of dowload movie files are compressed using this format so it may well be what you are needing to view the file

You'll need not another codec for as long as you live and you'll not have any conflicts like with other packs...

Sab & Waynster, muchas gracias, I will try both approaches and see if either works. Your stacks of beer credits mount daily.

the pack I linked too has divx and xvid codecs included...
I wouldn't suggest that you install mine and Waynster's as there could be a conflict.
He is right though, that the majority of avi files are encoded with divx so his link will suffice, though if you run into 'issues' later, you may need new codecs.

Should you have any trouble after installing Sab's codec pack, or have any codec related problems in the future, GSpot will check your file and tell you what codec you need so you can then go hunt them down on an individual basis if required. As Sab says, after installing that pack you shouldn't really have to but I downloaded something recently which used an uber-obscure codec and GSpot allowed me to find it when all hope was lost.

I'd just get the VideoLAN player, it plays everything there is to be played, .bin files, .cue files, .avi and even .vob files !
I wouldn't be without it, it is the dogs bollocks ! aaaaaaand FREE !

Well yeah but none of that makes any difference if you don't have the codec installed that you need to decompress the A/V stream within your avi, etc files. BSPLayer, WMP, etc will also play a lot of different file formats but the ability to handle, say, avi files doesn't help you at all without the right codec. Codecs are (generally) installed to Windows itself rather than to specific apps and are then made available to all media players you've got installed so an avi file should then play on whatever your favour player is.

True, but .vob and .bin and .cue won't play in most players..
