You can get bored with the same music after a few decades. So I branched out and found I really liked Indy. I don't listen to music radio because I never get the time and it winds me up: Radio 4 or Five Live is my limit. I know I'm not super-cool (or even cool for that matter), but I really got into Razorlight; Killers (love 'em); Snow Patrol and Editors (on a day I don't start out suicidal); Kaiser Chiefs; Stereophonics; Vampire Weekend. Recently I got some 'rock' - Lenny Kravtz - and though there's some nice guitar stuff going on sometimes, he's too retro and twee for me.

I love Bhangra but not Asian Underground. I've rediscovered The Jam.

So when you have all picked yourself up from the floor after laughing at me, any ideas of who else my orthodox little soul would like? btw, I find the Kooks and Jarimoquai irritating.

By all means recommend something different or experimental, but warn me, eh? And would there be anywhere to go to sample some of your recommendations on the 'net?

On a chattier level: what is it that you can't stop listening to at the moment?

Buy Market Harbour by Ginger. It's one of the best albums ever. It's just about impossible to categorise it, but it's quite frankly amazing.

And then when you've discovered you love it, go and buy all the Wildhearts stuff available.

My girlfriend got me into The Howling Bells which I love. I love the sort of softness of the overall sound, the intracacy of the riffs and the fact it still sounds really rocky and heavy. Her voice. Ugh, it's powerful as fuck. Here's my favourite song: Low Happening

They've only got one album, so shouldn't be hard to find.

Sam: I am similarly granny-esque, and have discovered I rather like Doves, the Shins, and, er... I can't remember.

I often go back to old faves like Belle & Sebastian, Saint Etienne, stuff like that.

A friend sent me a CD by Joan as Policewoman, which is pretty ace. Anthony of Johnsons fame sings on it from time to time.

I'm working my way through Youtube's videos.

Don't often go for women's voices (except the inevitable Janis Joplin) but that Howling Bells is OK.

Ginger definitely vibtrates the ahem... organs. Wildhearts has 'em beat in that department though. I can't get the stupid grin off my face. Mmmn. Love sounds that do that.

The Doves are a defintite hit.

dont ask me anything else about indie music. or any music at all, basically. my main musical discoveries this year:

a) there is no music that will ever render me as jubilant- jubilize me, if you will- as detroit techno

b) except, maybe, klezmer

There's a supremely good value 3cd Wildhearts retrospective out now. The Works. It's got a lot of the really brilliant b-sides on there as well as the usual hits.

I think we can say I am probably not a fan of detroit techno though I am not agin it either - but it hurts my head after a while, which is a pity.

So far; the Doves top; Elbow, then the Howling Bells and Wildheart.

That'll keep me amused for a bit. Cheers.

And I am listening to techno! Might last one round of it.

Oh yeah, Elbow, they're good. I have to confess I get all confused with all the bands with just one word, or word plus definite article, for a name. I expect them all to sound the same. Which, generally, they do

Picking a band on the basis of its name is not necessarily good. I went out and bought one by MGMT this weekend because it was, well four letters and made little sense. I found that appealling.

I don't like it.

Actually, this thread has given me an idea. I've been bored by the offerings of my iTunes library for a while so how about if we create playlists or mix cds or whatever but zip and upload and share with each other?

I like downloading other peoples playlists. I like knowing they've put thought into which songs they include.

This could possibly be another thread all together...

...And I'm not sure if many people would be up for something that requires effort...

Because I have been at home all day doing displacement activities. To his credit, he is not the one who expects feeding; I just think I should pay him back for the many times he looks after me!

It is shameful that it's taken me this long to get into The Wildhearts, but I just... kind of... overlooked them, I suppose. Anyway, I purchased the above recently and am looking forward to seeing them live on December 8th at the Manchester Academy. Woo! I've not got long to buy all their other records, but I'm hopeful of doing so.

Another musical treat to thank TMO for.

The Wildhearts goes without saying, and I'm not even allowed to say how sublimely perfect they are - no one band has had such a major influence on my life in so many ways.

I am currently loving with a big love the Eureka Machines who bizarrely I have just discovered are actually supporting the Wildhearts at Shepherds Bush tonight (god I wish I was there). "The light at the end of the tunnel is the light of an oncoming train" is my current favourite song of theirs - class.

I think Thorn went to that, I was supposed to go but took too long to get around to buying a ticket and they were sold out
