Alternatively, you could find out what their favourite TV program is and buy the necessary 'trump cards'. A cracking good game. I think they cover most popular kiddie shows these days. The Doctor Who ones are brilliant.

Safest option is to find out, via careful observation or subtle interrogation, what they've got loads of already - Lego, Brio, Star Wars figures, Scalextric, Dr Who figures, Magnetix etc etc - and then supplement the existing collection. You can never get enough Cybermen or Stormtroopers or extra bits of Lego. Plus parents usually appreciate it because they can just chuck it in the same box as whatever they've got already.
If you try and be original and different then you'll just end up with everyone hating you.

i don't know the kids at all and don't hang out with my friend at hers, just in bars and stuff. guess i could ask her, but in a way half the surprise is for her! dammit why don't six year olds have myspaces? this would be much easier then...

Sounds like you're just trying to get a bit of action out of this 'friend'. Try plying her with a variety of drinks next time you meet her in the bar, then play it by ear. I wouldn't be going to all this effort, that's for sure.

Try I Want One Of Those dot com, got my nephews' presents from there at Christmas and they love them, the 6 year old got a remote control shark that swims in the bath and actually moves like a real shark, they have a bunch of different cool and intersting things like that.
